So I’m reading this headline about the whole Iraqi torture scandal, which as everyone knows by now has caused the many people to wonder when, not if, Rumsfeld will resign or be fired. The headline in question says “Bush Standing by Rumsfeld at Pentagon.” Having mistakenly read the first word of the headline as ‘Bus,’ my first thought was ‘well if Rumsfeld is leaving his post why didn’t they just send a car to pick him up?’
Then reading more closely I see the true import of the headline. It says Bush is standing by. Well, now. That letter ‘h’ makes all the difference in the world, doesn’t it? Of course, now I’m troubled by the notion that President Bush is wasting time just ‘standing around’ over at the Pentagon.
